Privacy
This page explains what information ContractorFinder publishes about businesses, what we receive from people who use the site or contact us, and how to ask for a correction or removal. It describes what the site does today.
Business information we publish
ContractorFinder is a directory. Listings are compiled from publicly available business information — for example a business's own website or public business page — and from records published by government licensing authorities. A listing may show:
- the business name, trade, and city or business location;
- business contact details the business itself has made public, such as a phone number or website;
- service areas the business says it covers;
- a licence or registration number, its class and the authority that issued it, reproduced from that authority's published record.
Some businesses are run by one person, so business information can also identify that person. We limit what we publish accordingly: where a public record indicates that a licensed address is a residence, we show only the city, not the street address. We do not buy contact data.
Information businesses send us
When a business claims or corrects its listing, or asks us to withhold or remove information, we receive what it sends: usually a name, an email address, the message, and sometimes a document or other proof that the sender is connected to the business. We use it to handle that request and to keep a record of what we decided and why. Updates a business asks us to publish appear on its listing; proof documents and correspondence do not.
Information from visitors
- No accounts, forms or cookies. This site has no sign-in and no forms, and it does not set cookies.
- No analytics or advertising trackers. The site does not currently run analytics, advertising or social-media tracking scripts. If that changes, this page will say so first.
- Search stays in your browser. Searching and filtering happen in your browser using the published listings. Your search terms appear in the page address, so if you reload, bookmark or share that address they travel with it like any web address.
- "Near me" stays on your device. If you use it, your browser asks your permission, and your location is used in the browser to sort results by distance. It is not sent to ContractorFinder and is not added to the page address.
- Maps. Map tiles are loaded by your browser directly from OpenFreeMap, so that provider receives the same basic request information as any website you visit (such as your IP address and the map area requested).
- Hosting. Like any website, our hosting provider processes basic request information — IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time — to deliver and protect the site.
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and a person reads it. We use it to reply and to handle your request. We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
Our listings platform is separate
Online claiming on listings.contractorfinder.com, a separate listings platform operated for us by a third-party provider, is not open yet, and this site does not link to it. Accounts, sign-in and anything you submit there are handled by that platform under its own terms and privacy policy, not by this site.
Corrections, withholding and removal
Anyone can ask us to correct a listing, and a business can ask us to withhold its street address if it works from home — free, without claiming the listing first. We also review requests to remove a listing, for example where a business has closed, is duplicated, or is matched to the wrong record. We do not generally remove accurate business information, and licence details are corrected against the issuing authority's record rather than on request. To make a request, email hello@contractorfinder.com with the address of the listing page and what you want changed.
Your requests about personal information
You can ask what personal information we hold from your messages to us, and ask us to correct or delete it. We may keep a minimal record of a decision we made about a listing, so the same question is not reopened without context. We will tell you if we cannot do something you ask and why.
Children
ContractorFinder is a directory of businesses and is not directed to children.
Changes
If what the site does with information changes, we will update this page before or at the same time as the change.
